My Story
Back in January of 2023, after nearly a decade working as an advertising executive in New York City, I made good on a vow I’d promised myself years earlier: I would take a break from corporate life, quit my job, and solo travel.
And I did just that: Up and quit a stable job, with no new one lined up! My travels (and $avings account) led me to New Zealand for 3 weeks, followed by a month in Australia. This was the first time since high school that I was unemployed and not actively looking for my next source of income. At first it was quite jarring, and brought forth massive anxiety with a side of imposter syndrome.
Until… it didn’t.
Somewhere between snorkeling the waters of the Great Barrier Reef and an afternoon spent at a sheep farm in New Zealand, I actually started to relax. I breathed easier. I felt lighter, untethered. It dawned on me during my long flight back to America when the trip was over:
I don’t want to work forever.
Seems obvious, right? But how many people get to be voluntarily job-less, and really see how that feels? See what they do to fill their week, when 40+ hours free up and they’re not answering to a boss or checking work emails?
Now back in the states, I didn’t immediately look for a new job. Instead, I searched high and low for solutions that would lead to a much earlier retirement than societal norms dictate.
One day, I happened to stumble across a friend’s Instagram post about earning passive income through real estate investing. Intrigued, I spent hours diving into research, discovering a world of opportunity I had never considered before. I knew this was it. I had to get involved.
After reading up on different real estate strategies, I enrolled in a BRRRR (buy-and-hold real estate investing strategy that stands for Buy, Renovate, Rent, Refinance, Repeat) mastermind led by seasoned investors.
I live in New York City, but by October 2023 I had purchased two single family homes in nearby Philadelphia. After gut renovating and renting out both of those properties, I refinanced into more favorable interest rates and now earn passive rental income every month.
